A year of many farewells
(You know the expression « A banner year »? This was one of them.)

In May, I bid farewell to the theatre
In March, April and May, my play Pierre ou la consolation hits the stage at the Café de la Place.
Right here, with Nathalie Mallette
Directed by Martine Beaulne
The cast also included Germain Houde and Silvy Grenier.

In October, my book Quelques adieux (A Few Farewells) comes out.
Granted, not the greatest of book covers!
Writing books doesn’t necessarily reflect the same chronology as getting them published. In this particular case, Juillet, the first novel I ever published, was actually the second one I wrote. Thus, Quelques adieux is actually my first novel.

And in December, I bid farewell to my father, Paul-André Laberge.
My father, who taught Greek and Latin, went on to become Secretary General of Laval University.
Seriously smart, and barely in his twenties. Here, he has yet to be married. He’s a teacher at the Séminaire de Rimouski.

49 years went by between the picture on the left and the one on the right.
49 years full of life.
49 years filled with laughter, tears, children, drama, misunderstandings and successes.
One life.
Their life.

My mother, Rita Ménard, had sewn this outfit she wore on her honeymoon all by herself.

My father was a contestant on Le fil d’Ariane, one of the very first quiz shows on Quebec television.
We didn’t even own a TV back then. We had to watch the show at our neighbours’ place!

Christmas 1951.
Here I am in my father’s arms, not quite 13 months old yet.

We didn’t always see eye to eye, but there was always laughter, and we remained close.
